Overview

Drought StatusTests initiated by the Water Advisory and Water Quality Improvement committees demonstrate that up to half of the homes tested in the "high nitrogen" central triangle of Shelter Island have elevated levels of septic contamination approaching and, in some cases, exceeding potability limits.

The WAC strongly advises residents in the center to consider having their own wells regularly tested for water quality since high nitrate levels and associated contaminants can affect your health.  Please consider sharing the results of your tests with the WAC and town.

Comprehensive water quality tests can be requested by mail for $100 using this form: https://suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/Health-Services/Environmental-Quality/Water-Resources/Private-Well-Water-Testing-Program
